In 2024, CFCC will partner with the Palm Beach Pediatric Society to host a 3-part series focuses on the trauma-informed pediatric practice.

www.centerforchildcounseling.org | Center for Child Counseling |“Ask not why the addiction, ask why the pain.” This was one of the many profound statements that trauma and addiction expert and international best-selling author Dr. Gabor Maté shared during Part II of Center for Child Counseling’s 2023 Lead the Fight series. Chaired by Kathy Leone, vice chairman of the Community Alliance of Palm Beach County, and Julie Fisher Cummings, co-founder and chairman of Lovelight Foundation, and emceed by WPTV Channel 5’s Ashley Glass, the event took place at The Breakers by special invitation only and online for the public.

This interactive presentation draws on cutting-edge science to illuminate where and how addictions originate and what they have in common. Dr. Maté believes the source of addictions to be found in the early childhood environment–originating in trauma and emotional loss.

CEO Renée Layman and Chair of the Board of Directors Dr. Eugenia Millender explain how the Center achieves its mission through a public health framework which includes prevention, early intervention, and treatment strategies. Services include counseling for children and families experiencing mental health and behavioral health issues, as well as providing education, support, prevention activities, and integrated services within childcare settings, schools, and pediatrician's offices. Their aim is to mitigate the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), adverse childhood environments, and other stressors that impact the health and wellness of children and families.

www.centerforchildcounseling.org | Center for Child Counseling | Fritzi Horstman, founder and executive director of the Compassion Prison Project, stresses seeing people “for who they are, not for what they’ve done” in her presentation during CFCC's Part III of its 2023 Lead the Fight series on Wednesday, April 19, 2023. Emceed by Eugenia Millender, Ph.D., RN, chair of the Center’s Board of Directors, the event addresses adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and childhood trauma in relation to the prison population.

Horstman believes it is imperative that we address the chronic mental health issues in prison with common sense, compassion, and urgency. Compassion Prison Project is an organization dedicated to creating trauma-informed prisons and communities, bringing accountability and creative inspiration to all men and women living and working in prisons.

In 2020, Horstman directed “Step Inside the Circle” at California State Prison, Los Angeles County with 235 incarcerated men. The video is a call to recognize the physical, emotional, and social impact ACEs have wrought upon society and stress the importance of care–not punishment–going forward in the prison system.

During the event, Horstman dives into great detail about the video and the life-changing work she and her team are doing with incarcerated individuals and those who work in prisons.
