Stop Now and Plan
SNAP®
Struggling with your child's behavior? You're not alone — and there's a proven program that can help. For free.
SNAP® is an evidence-based, 13-week program that teaches children ages 6–11 and their parents how to manage emotions, solve problems, and make better choices. Developed by the Child Development Institute and funded by the Florida Network of Youth and Family Services, SNAP® is offered at no cost to families in Palm Beach County.
Children and caregivers learn together — building skills as a family, not in isolation. Siblings are welcome too.
Developed in 1985 and now used internationally, SNAP® is backed by decades of research showing real, lasting results.
Funded by the Florida Network of Youth and Family Services and Youth Services Department — no cost to families, ever.
Three Simple Steps to Better Choices
SNAP® teaches children a powerful three-step process they can use anytime, anywhere — at home, at school, or with friends. With practice and support, these skills become second nature.
When facing a problem, take a step back. Use breathing techniques or count to ten. Pause before reacting.
Identify negative thoughts and replace them with rational understanding. Think about what will happen next.
Develop a strategy to keep the problem small instead of letting it grow. Make a better choice in the moment.
SNAP® is an award-winning, evidence-based cognitive-behavioral and social interactional learning program for children, their families, and caregivers. It teaches children and the adults in their lives how to manage emotions and behavior by using strategies to stop, think, and plan positive alternatives before acting impulsively.
SNAP® Clinical Groups are specialized, gender-specific programs for children ages 6–11 and their parents or caregivers. Children attend their own group (SNAP® Boys or SNAP® Girls) while parents meet concurrently in a separate parent group — both running at the same time for 13 weeks. Children learn to stop and think before acting through engaging activities, role-playing, and interactive games. In their own sessions, parents learn effective parenting skills and strategies to cope with their own emotions and better support their child's growth. Siblings are also welcome in a concurrent activity group, so the whole family benefits.
SNAP® in Schools and Communities is a universal prevention program delivered directly in the classroom. This 13-week curriculum creates a "SNAP® culture" that engages students in understanding how their thoughts, feelings, and actions impact the people and environment around them. It teaches conflict resolution, anger management, and prosocial skills to the entire class — with teachers as active participants who continue reinforcing skills after the program ends.
As a licensed SNAP® affiliate, we are trained to deliver the program with full fidelity. SNAP® has been recognized internationally for its effectiveness, with research showing significant reductions in conduct problems and improvements in parent-child relationships and family well-being.
What the Research Shows
Fewer arguments at home and less aggressive behavior
Less bullying and school violence, more positive peer relationships
Reduced stress and anxiety with increased overall happiness
Improved self-confidence and self-regulation skills
Stronger parent-child relationships and family dynamics
Changes in brain development in areas responsible for cognitive control
Children are not born knowing how to manage their emotions. They learn it — through practice, support, and the patient guidance of the adults in their lives. SNAP® gives families the tools to learn together.

Gender-specific 13-week groups for children ages 6–11. Through role-playing, interactive games, group discussions, and self-reflection, children learn to manage emotions, solve problems, and build positive relationships.
Parents and caregivers meet at the same time as the children's group — learning the same SNAP® strategies so the whole family speaks the same language. Connect with other families facing similar challenges.
A 13-week universal prevention curriculum delivered in the classroom that creates a "SNAP® culture" — teaching the whole class how their thoughts, feelings, and actions impact each other. Teachers participate actively and continue reinforcing skills after completion.
Beyond group sessions, families receive personalized case management and support — including home visits, school advocacy, crisis intervention, and connection to additional resources and services.
Are you a father or father figure looking to strengthen your bond with your child? The SNAP® Father First initiative provides dedicated support for dads — any father, stepfather, grandfather, uncle, or male caregiver of a child age 17 or younger who wants to strengthen their relationship and parenting approach.
What Parents Are Saying
My child has learned to take a step back and think before reacting. The change at home has been incredible — fewer arguments, more communication.
— SNAP® ParentI didn't realize how much I needed this too. Learning alongside my child has changed how we talk to each other and how we handle tough moments together.
— SNAP® ParentThe group setting was so important — knowing other families are going through the same thing made us feel less alone. My son actually looks forward to going.
— SNAP® ParentMy daughter used to get sent to the principal's office every week. Since SNAP®, her teacher says she's a different kid. She's making friends and staying calm.
— SNAP® ParentThe SNAP® strategies work at home, at school, everywhere. My child now says 'I need to stop and plan' when he's getting frustrated. It actually works.
— SNAP® ParentI wish we had found this program sooner. It gave our whole family a new way to communicate and work through problems without everything turning into a fight.
— SNAP® ParentWith the brain still "under construction" during the middle years, it can be remolded by experiences that positively influence problem behaviors before they become fixed. Self-control is the heart of the matter — and it is one of the best predictors of a child's happiness and success.
