Course Description

Foundation for Addressing the Social-Emotional Wellness of Children Using Play

This course is designed to provide students and professionals with the foundation for using client-centered play therapy. The modules include videos and examples of play therapy in practice, providing participants with actual tools they can immediately use in practice.

Description:

1: History and Theoretical Basis for Play Therapy

Objectives:

  • Understand the historical roots of play therapy
  • Be able to discriminate between play and play therapy
  • Recognize why play therapy is effective for young children

2: Establishing a Therapeutic Relationship

Objectives:

  • Understand impact of attitude and acceptance on the therapeutic relationship
  • Know the three attitudinal qualities of a therapeutic relationship
  • Understand the importance of suspending judgment for the healing process
  • Able to recognize counter-transference in a clinical setting
  • Understand the importance of setting structure in a clinical session
  • Able to implement three structural tools in a clinical setting

3: Reflective Listening

Objectives:

  • Understand reflective listening as a means to developing a therapeutic relationship
  • Understand encouragement as a strategy to build self-esteem and foster ability to internalize appropriate behavior
  • Demonstrate 4 levels of reflective listening: tracking, feelings, enlarging the meaning, and encouragement
  • Understand reflective listening as a means to help clients process, problem solve, and understand their issues/problems/conflicts

4: Limit-Setting

Objectives:

  • Understand ACT Model as a Cognitive-Behavioral strategy
  • Be able to create and apply appropriate three step limit-setting in a clinical setting

5: Choices

Objectives:

  • Understand choices as a way of helping children develop inner locus of control (empowerment)
  • Demonstrate the ability to giving therapeutic choices (including the importance of setting limits first)

Presenter: Jane Robinson, LMHC, RPT-S, Infant Mental Health Specialist

jane 5Jane Robinson, LMHC, RPT-S founded the Center for Child Counseling in 1999. She retired in May 2013 but continues to work as a consultant and volunteers as a trainer, and supervisor. She has presented numerous workshops at professional, local, state, and national conferences. Jane created a manual, “Managing Feelings and Behaviors in the Classroom and at Home,” used by the Center for Child Counseling as a guide and reference for teachers and parents of young children (click here to purchase). Jane co-authored a chapter in “Play Therapy Techniques with Very Young At-Risk Children in Child Care Settings” published in the book Play Therapy with Very Young Children, edited by Dr. Charles Shaefer.
